Sam Raimi Discusses the Casting of John Krasinski as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange 2

June 26, 2022

A commentary track for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness provides further information regarding Reed Richards’ appearance.

The appearance of John Krasinski as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was one of the most talked-about moments. Fans have demanded for years that Krasinski play Mister Fantastic when the Fantastic Four enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Due to the fact that Krasinski’s presence in Doctor Strange 2 had not been publicised beforehand, it goes without saying that many fans were excited to see him play the part.

The film is now available digitally for purchase, and the home edition includes a new audio commentary track. According to The Direct, in the commentary, filmmaker Sam Raimi explains how the Krasinski appearance came about. Due to the multiverse, Marvel reportedly had little difficulty approving this cameo, as it does not necessarily require Krasinski to play the MCU’s Variant of the character (although, that could still theoretically happen). With this in mind, Marvel also observed the popular desire for the casting and accurately deduced that it would make for an amazing, fulfilling appearance.

“It’s so funny that Kevin [Feige] cast John [Krasinski] because the fans had a dream of who the perfect Reed Richards would be. And because this is an alternate universe, I think Kevin said, ‘Let’s make that dream come true.’ I’ve always really enjoyed all of his performances.’”

Screenwriter Michael Waldron also spoke about how much of an “honor” it was to write for this character int he MCU while giving praise to Krasinski in his work bringing that role to life.

“Reed Richards is my favorite Marvel Comics character, so it was a real honor to get to write his first entry in the MCU. John’s such an amazing performer and such a great partner in bringing this role to life for the first time.”

When Will We See Reed Richards Again?

It has been reported that a new Fantastic Four film is in production, with the film slated to conclude Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No cast members have yet been disclosed for this film. Following his portrayal as a Variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many fans may expect that Krasinski will also play Reed Richards in the MCU. This is plausible, however Krasinski has not been officially announced as a part of the project as of yet.

There have been numerous films featuring the character Reed Richards. Ioan Gruffudd portrayed him in the 2005 film Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Miles Teller recreated the role in a 2015 remake. Reed Richards was originally portrayed by Alex Hyde-White in a 1994 Fantastic Four film that was filmed but never released. Time will tell who the next film’s stars will be.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is available for streaming on Disney+ and digital purchase.
